The Smithsonian’s new Museum of the American Indian has opened its doors to the public. The museum houses over 8000 objects from across the Western Hemisphere, including paintings, movies, music, masks, and much more. The museum takes up the last remaining spot on the National Mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monument. Museum officials expect the museum to attract over 4 million visitors each year. When Francis Scott Key saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, it inspired him to write “The Star Spangled Banner.” The song become so popular during the Civil War that in 1931, by an act of Congress, it was officially designated the national anthem of the United States.
